H1N1 Flu, Swine Flu Virus Prevention

by Top Ten Review on September 14, 2009

The difference between the H1N1 and a normal flu is that it strikes normal healthy persons. A normal flu will usually strike the very young and the very old. The difference in symptoms lies in that  it is the same symptoms as a flu only more severe. Younger people at greater risk for H1N1. H1N1 is also known as the swine flu virus

Most of the cases of the swine flu begin with mild symptoms.  Some anti –virals work against the H1N1 virus but there is no real vaccine available for H1N1.  The best protection is to practice save hygiene. When a person sneezes they atomize droplets of the virus and it infects anything it comes in contact with.

When a potential victim touches a doorknob, table, handrails or other surfaces and rubs his eyes, nose or mouth, the virus is transmitted to that person.  Also, if in the near proximity of a person sneezing and coughing, droplets of the virus in the mist can be inhaled and the victim contaminated.  The virus can live 8 hours and be a landmine to the unsuspecting.

Symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, confusion and vomiting. Most cases are treated and patents discharged save for a few that are detained for further treatment. Once you get it you cannot be re-infected. Your body builds up antibodies and you are immune.

Prevention is better than cure.

  • By covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and then disposing of the tissue you’ll not spread the virus.
  • Always wash hands frequently with soap and water. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers work too but must be worked in the hands until the gel is dry.
  • Do NOT touch eyes, nose or mouth
  • Staying home for at least 24 hours after a fever subsides (without medication) so as not to spread the virus

167-212 degree heat kills the virus as well as hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, alcohol, iodine and some household detergents.  Wipe all tables, bedposts and all surface areas in an infected room handled by the sick patient.  Dishes and flatware should be washed in a dishwasher.
